About Me

I have a diverse professional background, driven by my eagerness to explore new opportunities. My experiences in academia and industry, as well as my journey as a mother and scientist, have shaped my passion for science communication and leadership. In addition to conducting my own research, I write, edit, and interpret research to make it more accessible to a wider audience.

Research Background

I earned my PhD in physical chemistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, with a focus on semiconducting materials and techniques of scanning probe microscopy, spectroscopy, and computation.

I was born and grew up in Taiwan, where I completed a BS in chemistry and an MS in molecular science studying atmospheric molecules. Before pursuing graduate school in the US, I worked as a product development engineer for a Taiwanese display technology company. Currently, I’m a chemist at Eastman Chemical Co. based in Tennessee, where I developed microscopic methods to characterize (mostly plastics) materials.

STEM Story

As a first-generation immigrant who uses media to help me adjust to the language and cultural barriers, broaden my grasp of science beyond my specialized expertise, and share my STEM story as a mom and scientist, I have witnessed the power of media influence.

Along with my graduate school and motherhood journey, on top of being an international researcher, I’d admit that the responsibilities and challenges are tough. It means working on weekends and late nights, and missing social gatherings. I constantly look for ways to fight the feeling of isolation and not being enough with all of my roles in life. I’m learning how to balance and I want to share it — this is why this website was born.

On any given day, I am a science-majored PhD balancing research and personal family life, who writes about science and works to make science accessible by engaging the public with science content and science policy, writing about scientific and social issues for the general public.

In 2022, I was a AAAS Mass Media Fellowship and when I returned from the science writing desk to my scientist role and family life, I recognized that I had a better and deeper understanding of the world that guides me to be more open to the possibility of facing my children, their future, and the future of the planet.

My passion for science and writing drives my goal to bridge the gap between the scientific community and the public, and to use my platform to educate and engage people on scientific and social issues.
